SEPAR Events

Event Listings

SEPAR events are listed first followed by SEPAR Announcements in chronological order below; Other Amateur Radio Events are located at the bottom of this page. Event listings may be submitted to SEPAR.mail@gmail.com and will be published if they meet our community service criteria.

SEPAR Weekly Net

The SEPAR net is held each Tuesday at 1930 hours local time on 146.55 MHz simplex.  Check-ins will also be taken via repeater on 147.36+ (tone 110.9) starting at 2000 hours local time. We invite participation by all Amateurs.  The Net Script is on-line for the Net Control Operator.

Being an Emergency Preparedness Net, we encourage check-ins from Community (Reception) Centres and other civic locations. These are the locations we will set up Amateur stations in the event of an emergency and we encourage SEPAR and ESS members to practice using the radio equipment located there.

We encourage simplex check-ins for any stations that would like to try to contact Net Control directly. In an emergency we may not have a repeater so it is always good to know if simplex will work for your location. Net Control will ask for simplex check-ins at 1930 hours. Please come on with your phonetic call-sign. If Net Control can copy, you will be invited to check-in with your location details. If you cannot be heard sufficiently clearly, Net Control will ask for any relay station to assist.

If anyone wishes to try formal written messaging (NTS format) we will try to accommodate you after the conclusion of the Net.
If you have any additional ideas to make the Net more emergency communications oriented, we’d like to hear from you.

April SEPAR - ESS Exercise Report

SEPAR Coordinator Fred Orsetti VE7IO sent along the following report on the ESS - SEPAR Exercise.

On Saturday April 5, 2008, ten members of SEPAR provided communications for the ESS exercise using our newly completed grab and go kit (see photos below).

Objective  # 1
  • We achieved all on the list with the exception of the CW message handling mainly due to lack of CW operators.  CW was sent from the mock reception center but we lacked message handlers for formal traffic.  All messages sent via voice and Airmail in standard NTS format and were all passed successfully. In the evening I further sent formal messages to the RAC Section Manager, the Section Emergency Coordinator and the District Emergency coordinator using the BC/Yukon traffic net on 3.716 mhz.
  • Antenna setup went very well with the HF, VHF/UHF antennas ready for use in just over 30 mins.  We were delayed in setting up the radios as ESS required the space while we were setting up.  Once we had access to the tables we were able to set the radios up in about 15 mins.  It took a little longer to get the Airmail working as finding a node from out location was difficult.  In the end we were able to connect with VE7SWF at the PREOC and this worked well.

Objective # 2

  • The radio room and hall #1 was operational and received good voice communication via VHF simplex and the SARC repeater but failed to make any contact on the HF bands.  This is a concern and it is most likely the antenna at the radio room that has failed again.  APRS was operational from the radio room and they were able to monitor all the vehicles equipped with APRS.

Objective # 3

  • We were able to liaise with several of the ESS coordinators as well as with John Evanochko the ESS director. ESS provided us with some messages although we were prepared to handle much larger volumes.  ESS volunteers were able to see the communications setup and our ability to provide communications in the field.

Objective # 4

  • We do not yet have the kit setup manuals and this exercise will give us some ideas as to what is needed in the setup manual.
  • We used both the PEP and the RAC incoming and outgoing message logs and there was virtually not difference in the recorded information.
  • We did not log each formal message contact however each message delivery information was noted in the operators note area.
  • We need
    • Kit setup manuals
    • Kit operating manuals
    • Emergency coordinators guidelines.
    • Antenna setup procedures.

Objective # 5

  • We did not receive too many questions however we had a lot of very interested ESS volunteers and I assume the questions will come next time.  I received a copy of the communications check list which was given to each volunteer and I will go over it so we can ensure that we meet their expectations.
  • Our communications ability was easily an 8 on a scale of 1 to 10 and I and the operators were very comfortable that we could have handled any amount of message traffic they had.
  • We did identify a couple of obvious areas that need to be attended to but they were not serious concerns.

Objective # 6

  • We handed out the new SEPAR brochure
  • We did not get into any discussions on the Red Cross or RAC
  • SEPAR did handle health and welfare messages without any noticeable problems.

Objective # 7

  • Take down of the antennas and packing the gear went exactly as we had visualized and all the components for kit # 1 are now back at John Brodie’s.
Objective # 8
  • We have not confirmed a date for the post exercise meeting however it will be very soon.  Training ideas are welcome.

We are now working on kits 2 & 3 and putting together the power box for kit #1.  This box will hold the battery, coax and likely the VHF/UHF antennas.

Briefly, this exercise was to test our ability to setup the portable station and provide communications for ESS, and it was a huge success.  It is now time to get all SEPAR volunteers involved with this project for hands on training.  I will be scheduling at least 2 days of training later this month and the grab and go kits will be on site.  I will send out training details as soon as we have the documentation and dates in place.

We would have liked to have had a larger group participating in this exercise but it was not practical and there were too many unknowns going into the very first outing however we will make sure all SEPAR volunteers are involved.  We have Canada Day and CN Family Days coming up, as well as other exercises, so there will be plenty of opportunity for ALL SEPAR volunteers to become familiar with this new equipment.

SEPAR Participation in SET 2007

We operated the 2007 Section Emergency Test (SET) from the firehall and it went extremely well, Fred Orsetti fixed the broken wire on the Butternut and it did an OK job but still tunes too low in the 80 meter band so needs further work.  We sent out one round robin message and one 3rd party traffic message and both were handled to completion.  We received our round robin message back 100% correct and that was the icing on the cake.

An update on the grab and go kits for SEPAR Operators at Guildford Rec Centre

On December 6th we took possession of the first items for three grab and go kits.  The radios, modems and related accessories are now in the radio room at Hall #1 and we will begin assembly of the first kit next week.  This is an exciting time for SEPAR and amateur radio in Surrey as we move to provide the city with state of the art amateur radio communications.  Once the first kit is assembled and tested we will move quickly to assemble the other two kits.  I have been told that once the first kit is up, running and debugged we will be doing a demonstration for the city council. I understand Dan Barnscher and Len Garis will book time with the council to demonstrate amateur radio and the capabilities of the new kits.

Everyone in SEPAR will be trained to use the new communications tools like Winlink and airmail once we have the three units operational.  Following that we will be initiating exercises to practice handling messages using the new modes.

I was in the radio room today and they are now making good progress the drop ceiling and lighting are installed along with a new floor and you cannot believe how quiet the room is now. The new operating desks and chairs should arrive very soon, I am most pleased.

We have a new brochure to be printed and that will be used at outings and demonstrations.

During the early part of this year many of you worked with Bill Gipps, VE7ISV, to produce the groundwork needed to add grab and go kits to SEPAR.  Since those early meetings we have worked with the Surrey Fire Services, in particular Dan Barnscher, to fine tune the design of the kits.  During this same period the PEP folks also began designing kits for their needs, and in fact followed most of what you had work so hard to produce last spring.  There were some differences and we chose to follow some of the changes made by PEP mainly so we would have compatibility for training as well as interchangeability should there be a need to swap radios or whatever in cases of emergency.  Therefore the kits for SEPAR and PEP will be very similar but not completely the same.

Last week we finalized the purchasing plan and we have now gone to the suppliers for quotes on the main pieces of hardware and software, things like the radios, modems, generators, power supplies and other gear needed to get started on our first three (3) kits.  Today I emailed the quote request to our local suppliers as well as Radio World in Ontario.  And, Radio World has already responded with prices on most but not all of the items, this is very good news.  If the other suppliers are as responsive we will have most of the pricing by the end of the week and we can begin to compile all the prices and submit it to the city finance department.  The city requires 3 quotes on all items so the process will take a bit of time, however, we may see our first grab and go kit before the end of the year with the other two (2) shortly afterwards. The people at Surrey Fire Services have been extremely helpful with this project and continue to support the use of amateur radio in emergency situations.

Everyone who has worked on this and other projects during these past months has contributed to the recognition of amateur radio by the Surrey Fire Services and I, as coordinator, thank you all very much. As we near the end of this year we will have a full meeting of SEPAR to get your feedback on the past year as a whole. Thank you to all SEPAR members

It must be Christmas! We had our first session with the grab and go equipment on Dec 23rd, unpacked the boxes and did a lot of planning.  We will document the process through photos and written record and we will share them with you here on the website.
Kit contents Christmas comes to SEPAR
The kit contents are ready. We plan to meet each
Sunday morning at 0800 to work on this and we should
have something by the middle to end of January.

A Busy Time

We have been somewhat busy over the past 3 months and we have made good progress.  At this time we have the final document ready for the grab and go kits and will be delivering it to Dan Barnscher of the Surrey Fire Dept. on Wednesday morning, after which we should be ready to go.  This means we will be looking for volunteers to help with the assembly of the kits, please contact Bill Gipps, VE7ISV at Bill.Gipps@ideasmcs.com or John Brodie, VE7JBB at brodiejb@shaw.ca, if you can volunteer and time.

SEPAR CN Day Display -  September 9, 2007

CN Day is a community event staged by Canadian National Railways and their employees at the Thornton Yards near the Port Mann Bridge in Surrey. Although primarily for the families of the employees, the public is also welcome to attend. Many displays are set-up and include emergency services, community groups and model railroad clubs. SEPAR participated in a display with the Surrey Emergency Program. SEPAR volunteers demonstrated various modes of the hobby and passed greetings via radio through the National Traffic System on behalf of participants who filled out a formal ARES message form.

SEPAR Barbeque - August 26, 2007

The BBQ held Sunday, August 26th was a huge success, and the weather cooperated with a sunny, warm afternoon.  The day started at 10:00am with a bunny hunt held at Crescent Park under the guidance of Jim Hurrell, VE7HUR.  The bunny was found in 1 hour and 18 minutes by Anton, VE7SSD, well done Jim and Anton.

The funding for our BBQ was provided by the City of Surrey through the Surrey Fire Services - Thank you. The food was outstanding.  In all there were 33 SEPAR, SARC members and spouses attending to make the day a fun event.  To those who could not make it this year we hope to repeat this again next year.

New Wetminster Hyack Parade 2008
Date & Time: Saturday, May 24th, 2008 - 08:00am - 1:00pm
Location: Downtown New Wetminster
Information: Ken Clarke
ve7uq@shaw.ca   604-816-5775

Operators assigned to the assembly area and parade officials will start communications at 08:00 and those assigned to points along the parade route will start a little later. The event starts at 10:30 with the Vancouver Police Motorcylce Drill Team and the parade follows. We are usually all done by around 13:00.

Ken is in need of about 25 operators. Assignments will include such things as assembly area, judging, shuttle buses, police, with various Hyack and parade officials, P.A. announcer, dispersal etc. The parade committee also counts on us for communication at many of the intersections along the parade route and would appreciate any help we can provide with the actual manning of the traffic barricades.

Please let Ken know whether you will able to help.  As always, new hams are very welcome. No experience is necessary, we can certainly buddy up any brand new hams with an experienced operator. All that is required is a 2 metre handheld (and hopefully a spare battery!)
